The next President of the United States will set the course for America on a number of critical issues. The caucus is your opportunity to choose a candidate that best fits the direction YOU feel our country should go in.

Below is a list of the issues on the forefront of today's Democratic Presidential discussion.  To find out more about what each candidate believes about a particular issue, use the helpful tools section located to the side.

Every Democratic Presidential candidate will make college affordability a priority in their administrations. In recent years the cost of obtaining a higher education has soared, putting college education out of reach for more and more students. Most candidates advocate increases to federal student aid, work-study programs and other forms of financial assistance. A few candidates advocated making the first two years of college free.

Every Democratic Presidential candidate firmly believes that the war in Iraq should end, but the candidates have differing views on how soon troop withdrawal should begin, whether or not we should hold dialogues with leaders in the Middle East, and whether or not war should even be an option in foreign policy.

Every American deserves access to quality healthcare and this election cycle every Democratic Presidential candidate has come out in support of universal health coverage. How to fund it and to what extent a person should have it are major areas of contention in the Democratic primary.

Every Democratic Presidential candidate acknowledges threat of global climate change and the tremendous opportunity our nation has to help restore our environment. Solutions offered range from a ban on new coal plants to a corporate carbon tax on polluters. Most candidates offer some form of cap on carbon emissions within their plans and support new international negotiations on the issue.

Every Democratic Presidential candidate understands that America is facing an energy-crisis. Gas prices are sky-rocketing, dependence of foreign oil is increasing, new technologies are not being utilized and Americans are suffering. Each candidate believes in increasing investment in renewable sources of energy, but there is much debate over which new energy source is best equipped to handle the nation's energy needs: wind? solar? hydropower (water)? biofuels? or geothermal? There is also a dialogue about whether clean coal and nuclear power should be considered in the nation's energy policy.

Every Democratic Presidential candidate realizes the important contributions that immigrants have and continue to make in America each day. They also understand the problems and consequences associated with high levels of illegal immigration.  Each candidate has a different proposal to handle the issue ranging from tighter border security to lowering incentives for illegal immigrants to enter the country. Most candidates support improvements to the current legal immigration system and some form of guest worker program with a path to citizenship.
